I am DVM Prof at Osaka Unv..Japan...Very good video...I have worked with many barefoot peformance horses...mostly stock breeds....appaloosa QH..ect...make shure your horse diet is correct..many problems start with nutrition or lack of...if its a stock type horse always remember short toe and keep some heel..for in time navicular will begin..so keep a? good heal. I have to agree there that they are very lets get the job done attitude. however most of the time we find them to be quite carring, even pointing things out that we have missed with other issues. taken the time? to try and I emphasize try to show me how to do a decent job of trimming between visits. I know the ones you are talking about however they drop the feet handle the horses rough almost like their changing tires on a car. glad you found a good one though. post some picks of your minis

I've had men farriers come and they're "all business"... hurry up & lets get this over with. They're very abrupt and generally uncaring for the animal they're working on. I own 2 dwarf Miniature horses (besides 5 minis & mini donks), & takes extra patience & care to trim carefully and not break the tiny (& fragile) legs. I'll never go back to a male? farrier.

on the barefoot thing we do both depending on where were riding. sometimes we get into rocky areas and such in the? bush and we like the shoes to protect their feet but otherwise we don't bother.

I hate women farriers. its bad enough for my ego that my wife is a better rider than me last thing I need around is a woman doing a better job on their hooves than me. Seriosly I have not actualy met a female farrier yet. I never realy gave it any thought untill I saw this video. good to see though I will show the video to my girls I want them to see they can do? anything. they want. continued By all means, if you want your horse barfoot,? then go for it. Im not trying to preach that shoes are the only way to go. I am just saying that for my horses situation - they worked. There is no way I am taking them off, because they work. It is as simple as that. If you as me, the people that do nothing but preach barefoot are the close minded ones.

Thanks for your concern, but if I were close minded, would I have tryed the barfoot route? Or would I have tryed switching farriers 3 different times? No, I wouldn't have. To be honest, I have a happy, healthy and pain free horse at home, and I have those shoes to thanks for it. He told me that the shoes would better support my horses's stiffles, and they do just that. He hasn't locked up once since he got these? shoes. Not once. I tryed barefoot, and it didnt work.

Tell us all technically? why you think the shoes are solving the problem? We can all learn together. Did your farrier tell you why they are working or did he just say your horse needs them?

I have been trimming hooves for over 50 years, I certainly know how to trim and shoe horses. I have the right and in fact the obligation to share my farrier expertise to help others with their horses hooves. Sir, Here is the deal. You should not be showing people VIA THE INTERNET how to trim a horse. Do you know the gaits of the horse? How a? horse is supposed to move? How many pounds per sq INCH OF WIEGHT THE HORSE CARRIES???!! I believe that you should not do things like direct people except in person. I think that you are very wonderful to have mastered uploading videos, and I commend you, however you should not be trimming horses, nor should you give advice on trimming horses.

hi im thinking about trimming my miniatures feet so will only have to get the farrier to come out every other time as it costs me 20.00 pounds. for not even 10 mins work and his feet never get particular long or misshapen. just gets a bit long in the toe. so would a? rasp to trim and smooth his feet round just until the wall be okay? he has never been lame. he is 2yrs 4m, goes on fields and roads a few times a week for light exercise.

@taraleev If your worried about expantion & contraction of the hoof capsul how does it make sense to completely incircle it in hard plastic and metal clamps? Its true that metal shoes impede expansion but the hoof still moves . hence the wear mark on the heels when sheos are pulled. Further more shoes are custum fit to 1/16th of an inch. horses hoof shapes can be classified my? 5 catagories, just the same 5 types of human finger prints. Shape is more then just a measurement

In my opinion, horses do better when they arent walking on the soul. My farrier cut my barrel horses feet flat, so she was walking on the soul. And she could hardly walk. So we cut out the sould a bit, deaper in the closer we got to the? frog, and she walks lots better. She has a rim to walk on rather than her soul.

just like everything else in life, there are several opinions on every matter, and everyone always believes theirs is the correct one.whether you choose to use a farrier or not is your choice. I use a wonderful farrier, for? a reasonable price ($25 per horse, trim only). I am not skilled enough to do the trims myself, and I only trust a professional who has had YEARS of training. He also fixed a really bad job done to one of my rescue horses by their prev. owner...a do it yourself-er

You do not need shoes but? you might need protection. Look into hoof boots. They work well. Shoes are destructive. They do not allow for expansion of the hoof. There are different kinds of boots: Epic Easy boots, Old Macs. You need to measure the foot correctly after the appropriate trim.

Hi, Pete Ramey is a very good start. His DVD series is excellent. I trim my own horses and without Pete, I could not have learned. My horses feet are now in better condition than when I had so called professionals. It just takes study and practice and you need gloves for sure. I am a scientist and pick things up quickly. You can too, just need to? study it and it would not hurt to find a mentor in the area that knows what they are doing. Be conservative in the approach

I dont know of any books, dvd's to teach such a complex craft.Only way to learn this craft is repetition with a tutor.I have shod and trimmed over 20,000 horses now, and i? see both sides of the farrier vs trimmer arguement and there are merits on both sides but only understanding on one side.People like Jessicamaree1987 dont understand the reasons behind these issues,some need shoes some dont, end of story.We have taken them from natural environment,ride them on roads etc, this is why we shoe

erm, i have been trimming for years and i wear gloves...i have always been told to wear gloves, even my farrier wore gloves. i have cut and rasped my hands too often. when your working away, trimming, and the horse moves, you slip and oops, there goes the skin on your thumb. thats like saying a farrier is inexperienced coz they wear chaps! or that a bricky has no clue because he wears gloves. really, gloves are an? important part of the kit.

the more wear a hoof gets, the faster and stronger it grows. wild horses travel hundreds of km,? moving all day, they dont have shoes. with trimming, the rasp represents wear, the hoof grows stronger to accommodate that wear. horses dont need shoes to control it. they were not born with them. the more they work, the better and healthier the hooves. if you worried about it, get them boots. nails thru the hoof wall create weak spots and cracks. increase concussion and limit movement. look it up.

@Nizingur Hey. I AM a shoer, & the reason that frogs shed is to make room for a new frog. A lot of the distress that a frog goes through is because of stall conditions - rotting, thrush,? just the natural order of things. Take a look at your cuticle. It sheds, or you trim it. That was hard to watch, I have no problem with you trimming your own horses because you have the right to screw them up, but dont get on youtube and act like this is an educational video on how to trim horses just because you saw it in a book somewhere. A good farrier is in constant pursuit of gaining knowledge on equine? mechanics and anatomy, and if every horse and every foot are different, then how is it that you know more than someone that works on 10,000 feet a year?

@thehappyhoof MY gelding shed his frog after he got a nail stuck in his hoof .. when I pulled he was lame but after about 2 weeks he shed-ed the frog completely off.. it grow back and its good now..but its because of massive trauma I believe.. its a way for the horse to fix its self.. I also had a friends horse shed its frog because? it was fully dried out, due to the lack of rain and when we got lots of moisture it fall off and regrow.. hope that helps.

I've been doing my own horses for the last 4 years and I have to say I prefer it.. I don't have to worry about a farrier coming out and my horses being lame for a week because they take all the hoof wall off!.. my horses have been sound, happy and unlame!!.. great way to trim so natural and your horses will thank you..? take off the shoes and let it go natural like nature intended.

My third horse came from an abusive home when I bought her. She had pretty bad hooves. A lot of things to say about her condition at the time, but one thing I noticed was her frog was shedding massively. There were tufts of frog? sticking out everywhere. After a while it disappeared. Why do frogs shed?

@thehappyhoof Very interesting that hooves grow faster in the wild. I've read that boots are recommended for people who runs horses a lot on pavement (Amish, specifically). But if hooves grow faster in the wild, maybe a horse that's run a lot on abrasive ground will start to grow a? hoof faster? I would think so.

You shouldn't do that if you don't know what you're doing. I cringed when you started tearing into the bars, and you? never rasp the outside before nipping the hoof. You want the foot level and balanced on both side and the frog needed to be trimmed more than what was done. That is why a professional will have to come out one day and fix what you have messed up.

Hi, your videos help me a lot ! you're an excellent teacher :). But I was wondering : I've looking like 100 trim (because my friend trims a? lot of horses) and i was wondering :how do i know if i'm ready to trim my own horse ? She is already barefoot for about one year. I know all the concavity and everything of that but I don't feel perfectly safe.. thank you :) (sorry for my bad english i'm french !)

@animalrights800 Agree with thehappyhoof. I'm 16 years old and I trim my horse myself. My father's girlfriend went to some sort of conference about barefoot trimming,? and she taught me how to do it. As long as you know the hoof anatomy and you know what to do and how to do it, anyone can trim.

someone please guess how much movement and abrasive wear would it take to? keep this hoof in the condition at the finish of this trim..........how rough of ground and how many miles would this horse have to move to maintain this hoof form? i live in wild horse country......and most all horse-people would never ever believe how abrasive and rough this country really is and the horse RUN thru it like it was sand.....

Most? hoof trouble is caused by lack of WEAR. The hoof GROWS more than it wears...that tells me the horse is on unnatural SOFT GROUND and doest move enough...........this creates work and income for FARRIERS.......separation is caused by lack of wear/trimming....thrush is caused by standing in bacteria/manure...every other condition you can think of is CAUSED by something that u ca learn to avoid in your horsekeeping.......its your horse and your money....wild horses never need trimmed THINK.

@animalrights800 You don't have to go to school to do it, just take a lot of time and care to learn hoof anatomy, and trimming tecnique, have the tools learn to use them etc. And most especially learn the right tecnique.? There are books by Pete Ramey that can help you. But the important thing is to educate yourself pretty thoroughy. But many, many people are now doing this, even old women like me and young girls like you. You could do it.

Sorry for the delay! It sounds like you are on the? right track. You just trim what's in front of you. The injured leg will certainly affect the hoof. You may want to run some photos by Heike Bean or Laura Florence. I am more of a "general practitioner" and send the more complicated cased to these guys. Just google them. I emailed through the website and haven't received a response so I will post here. I have a thoroughbred mare that has a old track injury, her left front pastern has turned in some. It causes uneven wear of the hoof. Is there anything? I can do about this besides trimming that hoof every week.

Can you clip and file your nails? Yes? Well than you can do this! I promise you. It's just hoof grooming. Doing one horse every week or every other week keeps the work to a minimum. Suggest you email Equine Science Academy and find a trimmer in your area. She can do the first trim while you maintain during the month. You will be on your own in no time! @Nizingur If it works for you go for it. Especially with a calm horse, you could even sit on a bucket with the foot in your lap. You don't get as? much leverage but it's easy. Touch up every week so there's not much to do. Hinds usually need a little less as they get worn down. You could also add pea gravel to his life and let your horse wear his own feet down!

@reininghorses57 Yes, no bills. Upfront you will have the cost of the rasp and? handle...get a good one...this is too hard to work with junk. If you are a woman or small, I usually recommend the short rasp for starters, then switch to the long rasp...Black Master is the one I use. I have short rasps if you want one...Heller doesn't make them anymore. Just email me at 4sweet.feet@gmail.com. I like the Hoof Jack stand too. Again, its pretty hard to work without for newbie.

I was always told never to touch the frog of the horses foot...But hey, what do I know? I've never actually owned a horse..:P I'm still learning. I was told that it you hit the frog, that it hurt them, so I was always scared to do ANYTHING with their feet. I'd get other people to do? it. (I used to just go for lessons and I would just do stalls and stuff. I never really messed with the horses besides grooming and the occasional trail ride)

In answer to Nick06Baseball most horse owners just make sure their hooves are trimmed every month. Their hooves are similar to our fingernails in the way they can grow quickly. How often you? have it done can differ from horse to horse according to if they have problems with their feet of not.

interesting to compare this paso's feet with mine (see Taco's trim). Taco's feet are very much more "alive" with healthy horn whereas? this one has very dead looking feet with wall horn seperated from the sole especially on the hind. also, the frog "shedding" is because most feet have little circulation like this one whereas Taco has very good circulation and grows tight white line(laminar horn) and healthy vibrant color horn.

@macdonaldfarrier--my horses are doing far better with me trimming than the best farrier I could hire--went through 5 farriers to try to find someone that could keep my mare sound--finally realized I would have to do? it myself--she is now sound and feels great--and this guy is a far better trimmer than I am--so if I can do it and bring back a horse from road founder --then he can teach--He is HELPING horses, thank God for barefoot movement--my three mares would be dead instead of enjoying life

I have been? watching your videos and notice your horses soles are so nice, smooth and concave. How are you taking care of their soles to keep them thick, functional and smooth? Really liking the bars on this horse too. I am working on helping my mare who has had years of never having her bars trimmed by our old farrier. Least to say her soles are covered in bar and are not this neat looking.

I've even reformed the? hooves of a Haflinger who's hooves looked Severely FOUNDERED they were so badly misshaped... the hoof will SHOW you what it wants, if you know how to read them... @Naessly I use an electric sander? (angle grinder) & then come in with the file to do the fine tuning work- it's SOO much easier, with 6 endurance horses- it helps greatly. I use the file for fine tune ups. I know what I am doing works- most recently my mare (we all do endurance racing) competed 3 days in a row (50 miles, 55 miles and 50 miles) for a total of 155 miles placing 3rd overall, completely barefoot (no padding) rough dry s. ca. terrain-

I Just did my first hoof trim on my three horses and the trim job came out great. One of my horse had a small? flair on the right rear that I successfuly removed. I decided to try this myself since the last farrier did not do a great job, he did'nt even try to remove the flair which I notice afterwards. So I knew then that he was not an experience farrier or just did'nt care for quality work! ....Lol ...But your vidio was very helpful....Thanks Bill.

I'm having such a hard time now with my horse's ''bars''. We do barefoot trimming here too, and his hooves used to be so soft,? and now, fortunately, they hardened :) I'm really happy about it because he walks and runs alot, which he never did before I started barefoot trimming him. But it's sooo hard to trim him now xD I'm not really strong :P so I struggle alot.

Good info? - thanks for sharing. I have 12 horses and we decided to go barefoot last year. Guess who gets to do the trimming? :D I appreciate all the info I can get on the subject!

@HoofTech There is no need for me to have video evidence! im watching yours and those are the points i see! are you a qualifed farrier? have you? done a training or apprenticeship course? Gloves? why not put it in your lap and you wont need gloves!
